Hi, I just joined this forum today and was surprised nobody had been venting their spleen about the famous traffic calming scheme in the old Crawley road, Roffey.

In my view the object of traffic calming is to make the road safer. Since this project was installed I have seen more accidents and near misses then ever before.

This was installed despite objections by the local parish council, and residents, and has been a total and very costly disaster. Far from making the road safer all it's achieved is the creation of rat runs in the vicinity, and profits for repair shops !!

(Presumably the Company that designed it made a fair bit too)

Hi John

Welcome to the forums.

I have not driven through that traffic calming system often. But I agree that like most of the schemes they seem just as likely to cause an accident than prevent one. Several years ago a 'traffic calming' measure was introduced near the Hen and Chicken in Southwater. It forced you to drive on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend. I used to walk my dog in a nearby field and got used to the sound of car horns and skidding tyres resulting from the frequent near misses it caused. Fortunately this particular chicane has since been moved a few yards along the road where it is no longer on a blind bend.

Personally I would prefer to see speed cameras. They keep the speed down but keep the traffic flowing and do not force you to drive on the wrong side of the road.

I agree

I think the roffey traffic calming makes the road a lot more dangerous than it was before
