can anyone help please

i am soon moving to southwater and have a question for anyone who knows the area well.i work at christs hospital and wondered if there is a quick way of getting from southwater to ch without using the main road and still being able to turn up for work in a reasonable state and not covered in mud !! would also appreciate it if anyone could tell me the approximate mileage for this journey.

thanks in advance.

Jerry

Hi Jerry

Thank you for registering and welcome to the forums.

I frequently cycle between Southwater and Christs Hospital. My preferred route is the Downs Links. Obviously at this time of year it can be a bit muddy so if you would rather cycle on tarmac you could go via: Church Lane - Bonfire Hill - Two Mile Ash Road. This route is longer and Bonfire Hill is quite a steep climb coming into Southwater but it will keep you of the mud.

I have added (very) rough sketches of these routes onto the map I made earlier when somebody was asking about cycling from Southwater to Horsham:

'hover' over the route numbers for the approximate mileage:

Route 3 via Bonfire Hill (2.7 miles)

Route 4 via Downs Link (2.1 miles).

You can zoom in or switch to the aerial view to give you a better idea of these routes. As I said in the other post I will eventually try and add some of these popular cycle route to the Virtual Horsham website.

Good luck with this and welcome to Southwater

Hi Jerry, I regularly cycle from Horsham to Crawley, mostly on road but the mile off road is enough to soak me in mud, especially at the moment. In order to be presentable at work I take changes of clothes when I drive in and shower when I get to work after cycling in. Luckily my company is cycle friendly with an excellent covered bike shed, a shower and a heated drying room.

Is there a shower at CH that you would be able to use, there must be one in the sports area? As for drying cycle kit and storing work clothes you would need to sort that out too.

As for the route, sort out the above and use the Downs Link.

Don't forget to persuade your employer to run the 'buy a bike' scheme. It is a taxation scheme that gives you up to £1000 tax free to buy a bike, clothes and accessories - providing that you use the bike for at least part of half of your journeys

Go for it!

Does anyone know if there's bike lockup facilities at Christs Hospital railway station?

I have only been on the station once. There are four unsheltered spaces at the station front. There is no easy way to get the bike from one side of the tracks to the other - you have to use the stepped subway!

Information on the station is available at the link below; thats where I found out about the bike parking!
