Using Virtualhorsham.co.uk we have now successfully customised Microsoft Virtual Earth to allow custom, high resolution images of Horsham Town Centre to be displayed in their correct geographical position. The new images overlay the existing Virtual Earth images which are out of date and are of a much lower resolution.

Horsham is the first location in the UK to achieve Virtual Earth aerial photography image replacement for an entire town centre and we are quite possibly the first town in the world to replace Virtual Earth aerial photography on this scale.

Virtualhorsham.co.uk is still very much an experimental site and we are continually working to improve its performance. We are currently focusing on the image loading speed which is slightly slower than we would like.

We have some exciting plans for this site which we will be developing over the coming months.

Many thanks to Jeremy and Jon from the Microsoft research team and Getmapping PLC for their help with this project.

Thanks M

I have now given the website visitors a check box to toggle the Visit Horsham data on or off The next step is to create the interface that will allow other datasets to be created by other suitable Horsham websites such as Hidden Horsham.

The higher resolution has also made me realised that some of the existing pins are a bit out. We can now place a pin with an accuracy of 12.5 cm. I will 'fine tune' the existing pin positions as soon as I get a minute.

Regards

I spotted a full size tennis court right next to Sainsbury's the other day. Totally invisible from the ground because of high trees.

Just a quick update:

We have now fully integrated the new images in to the VISIT Horsham website:

All subscribing businesses and the majority of the locations within the guide have a link to a map featuring up-to date high resolution images.

To view these images just click the map icon wherever it appears:

As before the existing Microsoft Virtual Earth images will load first which will then be overlaid by the new images.

The existing Virtual Earth road map and hybrid layers also remain available.
