I am disappointed that pubs nowadays tend to charge admission fees for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. I understand that they have to pay staff higher rates but personally I would rather pay an extra percentage on the drinks / food etc. The problem with admission fees is that it tends to tie you to the same pub all night. In the past I have preferred to have a drink in one or two pubs before settling on one to see the New Year in. I wondered what other think?

Hello Dancemix That is exactly my point. If I decide to make a big night of it at a hotel, with the family, with some entertainment thrown in, I don't mind paying an entrance fee. Most years I am not that organised. I would rather just go out and see how it goes, If I find a good pub with a good atmosphere and maybe some entertainment I honestly would not mind paying over the odds for the drinks. In this situation in the past I have often given good tips to the bar staff, bought the DJ a beer etc. I don't mind paying for a good night out and I appreciate the people that have helped made it a good night, I just object to being forced to pay up front and effectively being tied to the one establishment for the evening, especially when it turn out to be a big anti-climax.
