I am looking for Descendants of Samuel and Barbara (nee Mitchell) White. Barbara above was the daughter of Samuel Mitchell and Barbara Voice. Barbara was born in 1818 at Cuckfield, Sussex, as had all of the above. Looking for any White, Mitchell or Voice families in the Cuckfield area.

Hi Scott,

This looks like your family in the 1851 census in St Leonard's on Sea:

Samuel White, M, 33, rail lab, b Battle

Barbara, M,, 33, b Cuckfield

Ann, dau, 9

Lucy, dau, 4

James, son, 5m

and in 1861 in East St Billingshurst:

Samuel White, H, M, 42, brickmaker (moulder), b Battle

Barbara, wife, M, 42, b Cuckfield

Lucy, dau, 13, b Lewes

James, son, 10, b St Leonards

in 1871 they were in East Grinstead:

Samuel White, H, M, 53, labourer, b Battle

Barbara, wife, M, 50, domestic, b Cuckfield

James White, lodger, U, 20, labourer, b St Leonards

Matilda Harland, lodger, U, 18, Domestic, b Rochester

James Harland, son, 1 wk, b East Grinstead

even though James is described as a lodger, this must be their son.  I would guess that Matilda is his girlfriend and young James, their Illegit child.

I can't yet find James or Matilda in 1881

Does that help?

Henry

Dear Henry,

Thanks for the info,

This is very much my family.

Lucy was my great grandmother who emigrated to Australia with her

husband John Stedman and 2 sons in 1884.

Her brother James ended up in New Zealand, dying there in 1921.

Any other info you have would be most appreciated

Regards

Scott
