Let the new owners know that it would be a good move!:)

RE: The Cock Inn/Old Well

Why would anyone bother with that dirty old pub full of local regulars who look at you strangely if you walk in. Give me the Lintot or the Hen and Chicken any day. I think it will end up as a new block of flats.

RE: The Cock Inn/Old Well

Hello Phoebe

Thank you for registering and welcome to the forums.

I think it would be a very popular move to give The Cock it's original name back. In fact I would make a bet that at some point this will happen eventually anyway.

As you point out most pubs return to their original names eventually. I have seen this happen many times myself.

The Cock Inn/Old Well

I see that the Old Well is up for sale. It would be great if the eventual purchasers would restore its proper name again. This old coaching inn has been known as The Cock Inn for centuries, appears in bus timetables and is also quoted in directions. It's also an important part of Southwater's history. The Old Well means nothing - I believe it was chosen because they found a well on the premises but until the latter part of the last century, nearly every house in the village would have had a well, too, so hardly a novelty!

Many pubs recently have subscribed to the fad of changing their old and well known names - The Swan at Pulborough and the Horse and Groom in Horsham to name but two - but have soon found out that it's the way a pub is run that makes or breaks it and returned to their traditional titles.

So lets hear it for a return to The Cock Inn. If anyone hears of the sale going through, perhaps they can let us have the information.
