Really??!! Cosy and warm environment? It certainly didn't have that when it was the Cock Inn! If you were not one of the usual crowd who had their own tankard behind the bar then walking into that place was like a scene from a movie when the music would stop when a 'stranger' would walk in.

Agreed. The Lintot is great. Smoking pubs are stuck in the past and will have to change next week anyway.

Fantastic place The Lintot, been there twice already.

First time I went there I was stuck for choice when seeing the menus. Made my choice and the food was great. Great costumer service too.

10 out 10 in my book.

I Actutaly live in Horsham, but my parents live in Southwater , I have never been a fan of " Chain Pub / eating places " they do offer a very "safe " menu with very little variety , but and it has been said on here, the Linnott are offering what the people want , for me and my personal vote i use the old well ,they have a large garden - great for the kids - the Old Well has got to compete with the new pub - but i believe it can and should remain a "regulars" pub with its more cosy and warm enviroment and great variety of food

ps im a smoker ( for now) i never smoke indoors , im not keen on the smell of stale smoke

Just saw this and I would have to agree with DNWs comments about what a great cross section of the community this pub is attracting. I visited one lunchtime midweek and observed a huge mix of people all enjoying the 'offer'. I am not going to enter into the 'smoking' arguement but would urge everyone reading this to check out all the pubs in Southwater and make up there own minds...I think you have a great selection to choose from and good luck to all!

I went to The Old Well for a meal with my husband not long after it reopened and really enjoyed the meal. I thought it had improved a great deal. However, I was disappointed it had not gone nonsmoking when the ban was just a few months away. I have decided not to go back there until it is nonsmoking and the smell has gone away.

I live much nearer The Hen & Chicken and love the building but hate the smoke. This pub is empty most of the time and my neighbours have said they won't go there because of the smoke, especially as there are no extractor fans. I am sure that when these pubs have gone smoke-free, and redecorated local people will come flocking.

The other advantage The Lintot has is that it's child friendly, although admittedly mostly because it is smoke-free. But of course, you do need pubs where it is a child-friendly zone sometimes.

So I look forward to July 1st, when I will have a choice which pub I go to, and not be forced to go to the lintot only, which doesn't have the character.

In your previous post you said that "The Old Well has been changed dramatically inside and so have the clientele" This implies that the Old Well was trying to rebrand itself and look for new customers when it reopened. My point is that it is a fact that smokers are now a minority in the community. If you want to attract more customers from the community you will have a better chance by appealing to the majority. I have smoking friends who now prefer to drink in smoke free pubs. Go to the Black Jug on a Saturday night and you will find it packed. There are still plenty of smokers in there who are happy to smoke in the garden or out the front of the pub. Other pubs who have also voluntary gone smoke free have had similar success. The Boars Head for example. (Check out the reviews in the link).

The Old Well has the advantage of a garden (something the Lintot does not have) I believe that had they reopened as a non smoking pub some of the people who are now drinking in the Lintot would be drinking in the Old Well

You said the people of Southwater should support the existing pubs. The fact is that the 'new' pub is currently the only Southwater pub that is giving the people of Southwater what the majority want: A smoke free, family pub that DOES have plenty of community sprit.

Anyway, as you say, after July 1st we will all know where we stand and be back to a level playing field.

I dont think they have lost out on anything, they were just doing the decent thing for the faithful customers that do still smoke, you cant just throw people out for smoking, people have smoked in pubs for years and when the new laws come in everybody then knows where they stand.

Thank you for registering and welcome to the forums.

As I said in my opening post I generally prefer 'traditional pubs over 'modern' pubs. I regularly drink and (eat) in the Hen and Chicken and have had some great nights in there during the 12+ years I have lived in Southwater. I particularly like drinking (and therefore supporting) the Horsham Bitter.

The reason I have so enjoyed my visits to the Lintot is that it is smoke free. It is not just because I can breath clean air and not go home stinking of smoke. It is also because the knock on effect of this is that people who previously avoided smoky pubs have now started going to smoke free pubs. This IMO has resulted in more of a 'community sprit' in some of the smoke free pubs. You now get a much wider spread of the population in them rather that the traditional 'smoky' pub customer.

I have been to the Old Well since it was re-branded from the Cock Inn. I has an enjoyable meal there but I really think they missed a trick by not going smoke free when the pub reopened following its closure due to refurbishment. They will have to go smoke free in a few weeks anyway so what did they have to lose? I honestly think that if, when they reopened, they had marketed themselves as a smoke free pub they would be enjoying the level of custom that the Lintot has had since it opened.

After July 1st I am looking forward to regularly using all three of Southwater's pubs and I am glad to have the choice available.

Clive - Thanks for the link from your Horsham Pub Guide. It would be good to see the Lintot feature in there in the future.

I think that its a real shame that not more people in Southwater support the pubs that are already in the village. The Old Well has been changed dramatically inside and so have the clientele, It has a very warm and friendly atmosphere, and the food is cooked from fresh! Pubs do not have to keep their bad reputations,if more people would just give them a try when they have been changed around. Why not support people who try to make a living instead of giving your money to big chain pubs that dish out the same old heated up food. Where's the community spirit? Support the 'Hen & Chicken' and 'The Old Well' its a shame that Southwater is losing its village atmosphere, with its toy town look. Dont lose your traditional pubs as well.

A group of friends and I ate at the Lintot a couple of weeks ago in the evening and we were all extremely impressed with the layout and decor. The prices for both food and drink were reasonable AND it was so nice that it was completely smoke-free :cool:

However, our food order was a complete disaster, even though the staff were very apologetic about the cock-up, it did take well over an hour to sort out :crazy:

It hasn't put me off going back though as it was just so nice to be able to socialise without coming home smelling llike an old ashtray :D

I'm with you all the way on that one!! We went there a few nights ago. My wife and I took our 18 month old daughter and had dinner there. The food was usual chain pub grub but the pub is lovely inside, drinks were reasonable and as mentioned it was smoke free.

I will be going back again soon!!

Last night Mrs DNW decided she wanted to try out Souhwater's newest pub - The Lintot.

I must admit until now I had not been terribly excited about the arrival of a new 'modern' pub as I normally prefer old fashioned pubs with lots of history. However, the pub soon won me over when I saw they had Marston's Pedigree on the pumps (not surprising really as I soon found out the Lintot is owned by Marston's) The Lintot also has an excellent selection of wines and after our initial drink we decided to order a reasonably-priced bottle of Kumala Pinotage Shiraz to go with our meal.

The food was good and the drink was good but what struck me most about the Lintot last night was the atmosphere. There were people of all ages, families with young children, young and old couples, groups of friends, pensioners, in fact just about every demographic group that is resident in Southwater. All of these people where having fun and getting along fine and it really gave the place a sense of community spirit.

But the best bit of all (for me anyway) is that the Lintot is SMOKE FREE. The success of this and the success of the Horsham pubs like The Black Jug that took the brave decision to go smoke free early have really proved the doom-mongers wrongs. The smoking ban will not kill of pubs but will revive them!

Incidentally it is possible to have a cigarette in the Lintot they have thoughtfully put an outside patio area on the upper floor.

Well done The Lintot you will certainly be receiving our custom again :):)
