It would be great to see a new venue built but realistically I think it is unlikely. Even if it did happen it would probably take years before all the planning enquiries etc were completed.:crazy:

I know High Gain do a great job in promoting local gigs and bands, good on you for volunteering your time to them!. :cool:

For the short term at least, I think our best hope is to try and make the most of what we have already got in Horsham. Have you tried or considered approaching the Cricket Club. I think that would make a great venue. It is within easy walking distance of the town centre, already has a great bar and catering facilities and as is capable of putting on acts inside or outside.

I know there is a definite market for live music for people off all ages in Horsham. We have some great local talent and with the right venue and promotion I am convinced we could attract other high profile acts into the area.

Yer the HDLMA do a great job - i have been to some of their meetings in the past. I work (volunteer:P) for a local promotions organisation called highgain promotions. We would be happy to put on a gig of any kind - be it hip hop - rock - jazz - anything. We have a large PA system and a dedicated team. There is just an obvious lack of venues? What do people think the chances are of the council one day bulding/coverting a venue? I mean they build hospitals and new industrial estates etc that probably cost millions...so it cant be too much of a problem right?

Thank you for registering and welcome to the forums.

Hopefully you can take some comfort in the fact that most of the people who replied to this thread support the skatepark and the need for extra facilities for young people in general.

I am great fan of live music and I agree with you that this area would benefit from a decent venue to put gigs on. The Horsham Live Music Alliance seem to be doing a great job promoting live music in this area. Perhaps what is needed is a wider campaign, directed at the general public, to drum up support for a new venue.

Hi everyone im a newbie to the forum :) I live in southwater and not being an adult yet myself i can tell you there is nothing to do around here AT ALL! Its no wonder we (not me personally) are out on the streets causing trouble, smoking at a young age, doing drugs etc. You've heard it all before. There needs to be somewhere we can go and occupy ourselves.

The music scene in horsham is gradually getting much bigger with new bands coming and going all the time... i think there is alot of potential in the local area for talented musicians. Horsham has a selection of maybe 2 or 3 venues at the moment which all charge quite alot to even put on a gig there. Maybe it would be an idea to convert something into a venue perhaps or if we're lucky build a new venue? Maybe even run workshops for kids. That would get them off the streets easily.

I hope no one destroys this idea immediately but i honestly think its worth discussing...

Please let me know what you think.

These is an article about this in the County Times this week. Apparently there have been petitions submitted both for and against the scheme. The people in favour outnumber the people against by more the 2 to 1.

I think the skateboard park sounds a good idea and keeps the kids occupied. I still don't think it's enough for a village this size though.

If it is done properly I think it is a good idea. Why do you say they don't spend anything on the adults when we have just had a new medical centre and a new shopping centre with more to come including a pub / restaurant etc. :unsure:

There's hope for me yet!:)

I am just the wrong side of 40. As a teenager in the late 70's I had a skateboard. It was quite a craze then, we used to save all our pocket money to get a different colour set of wheels etc.

I am in favour of the Skate Park. When ever I have been past the one in Horsham it has looked busy to me. I think you have to try and remember what it was like when you were young. Skateboarding is a relatively cheap activity that young people can partake it. Would you rather they joined 'hoodie' gangs and hung around street corners intimidating people?

Skateboarding also keeps people fit. Nowadays there are so many obese kids of the PlayStation generation it seems right to encourage any activity that involves physical exertion.

I am still not sure that I would be brave enough to go skateboarding at my age though!

I have done a bit of research and found this site.

My initial impression, from reading the minutes and other content on the site, is that it has been quite well thought out and the young people that want it have got involved in a responsible way.

Obviously it could cause a few problems and there will be some genuine concerns. Like you say this forum can be used to air views from both sides of the fence. We are getting quite a lot of visitors now, including the Local Press and the Council, so please make your feelings known to them.

I personally like your compromise idea. I regularly cycle on the Downs Link and might be persuaded to stop off and do a bit of circuit training. Then again it might be hard to resist the temptation to overshoot to the Bax Castle like I normally do. :w00t:

I think we do need to something for the youngsters of Southwater. Lets face it there is not much for them to do. I don't know if a skate park is the answer but they need something. I think you are right, it would be better, if it goes ahead, if the park was integrated into a wider ranging facility for people of all ages.

Why is the village so keen to do anything and everything for the youngsters in Southwater, but nothing for anyone else (ie from older teenagers up to the OAPs)? A new skate park is the latest idea, but no though to the nearby residents, no thought to who will supervise the kids, no thought for the dog walkers, no thought for the resident wildlife (badgers, foxes, birds, snakes and lizards) who will be driven away.

The skate park in Horsham Park is rarely used, is often covered in litter, including broken glass and the skaters prefer to use Chart Way (as anyone trying to walk it will testify).

Let's spend the money on something which will be more appreciated: let's use this forum for ideas.

If in the end we have to have the skate park, how about a compromise and provide 'circuit training' equipment alongside for the use of adult keep-fitters. The presence of adults MIGHT also deter the kids from vandalising the skatepark area.
