I think Newbuildings Place is out on the Dragons Green Road. Up Church Lane, left at Marlpost Meadows and just keep going. :)

Sorry Luke I have no idea where Newbuildings Place is/was in Southwater.

It might be worth contacting the Southwater History Group to see if they can help.

Thanks for that, its quite an interesting read but i couldnt find anything related to The Carpenters. However, there is a lot about "Newbuildings Place, Southwater" (which i think is where a poet used to live)...Where abouts in Southwater is it though?

I remembered, from a visit to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire that the vast majority of Churchill's letters (both personal and political etc.) had been catalogued.

I wondered if they were available on line and come up with this (filtered for references to Southwater)

Churchill + Southwater

Note WSC = Winston Churchill

CSC = Clementine Churchill

Apparently you can actually make an appointment and go and physically look at these archives. So anybody who has an interest in Churchill's connection with Horsham and Southwater or Churchill in general might find this site useful.

Carpenters hunting lodge, Shaws Lane

During the war Winston Churchill used to visit a hunting lodge which was where my house is now. I’m just interested to know if anyone has any more information on the lodge or pictures...anything really just for general interest sake.

An article from an old parish news had a paragraph saying, “...when Clementine Churchill, who was convalescing here after a childbirth in 1909, wrote to her husband Winston, “It is quite wild, savage and altogether delightful here. The house is quite as rough as the shanty on the desert island in The Admirable Crichton! The butter is yellower, the cream thicker and the honey sweeter (the neighbour keeps bees) than anywhere in the world!” She was staying at carpenters, a hunting lodge at the end of Shaws Lane…”
