The Cock Inn/Old Well

I see that the Old Well is up for sale. It would be great if the eventual purchasers would restore its proper name again. This old coaching inn has been known as The Cock Inn for centuries, appears in bus timetables and is also quoted in directions. It's also an important part of Southwater's history. The Old Well means nothing - I believe it was chosen because they found a well on the premises but until the latter part of the last century, nearly every house in the village would have had a well, too, so hardly a novelty!

Many pubs recently have subscribed to the fad of changing their old and well known names - The Swan at Pulborough and the Horse and Groom in Horsham to name but two - but have soon found out that it's the way a pub is run that makes or breaks it and returned to their traditional titles.

So lets hear it for a return to The Cock Inn. If anyone hears of the sale going through, perhaps they can let us have the information.

I have seen some really nice houses in Ash Rd but asking around a few locals they all identify Ash Rd as the rough area of Southwater.

Can someone give me an idea if this is true and if so how rough is rough! I really like Southwater but don't want to make a mistake by moving into the wrong street.

So, you have some things that you want to get rid of? You can't really sell them on eBay, as it's not worth it or you'll really not get anything for it. It's not the sort of thing that the charity shops will want. But you know that it is what someone else wants or needs somewhere near you. So yuo've found the place to make someone happy and help the environment.

No more queueing on a Bank Holiday Monday at Hop Oast to throw away things when there's a voice in your head that says, "Someone else could use this."

"I wonder if someone nearby has a thingy they don't want or need any more? It's just a bit too expensive to buy, and someone must want rid of theirs." Well you've found the place to look, and if you can't find- ask!

I hope this little place becomes a community of mutual help, and the bins of Sussex are a little less full..

Music Classes for children from 6 months to 5 years

From 2nd June Jo Jingles music and movement classes are returning to Southwater.

Classes will be held each Tuesday during term time, with different classes for children under 2 years and over 2 years.

Jo Jingles is the fun, music and movement experience with the educational slant. Structured, fun classes last for 45 minutes, during which time you & your child will sing songs, play percussion instruments (2 different types of instrument every week, with every child having their own).

No Joining or membership fees are charged, and prices are just £4.50 per week.

Anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

I had need of the non urgent police number this morning (0845 60 70 999) as my rear windscreen was smashed overnight. My car was parked in Cedar Drive.

If you have read the post by Deputy Clerk of Southwater Parish Council under the topic of Kids will be kids, the council urged “Please do report all incidents of anti-social behaviour either on this number or in person at the police office in Beeson House. All reports are recorded, and the police patrols react accordingly”.

It was also interesting that the officer I reported the incident to this morning looked at other reports over night to see if he could connect it in to anything other reports where a suspect may have been identified or where they might have been caught on CCTV. He noted that there was one report of anti-social behaviour in Pevensey Road.

They've opened with limited stock (understandably) which they are improving on gradually, so that last time I went in they were able to cater to my fussy tastes. It seems to be proving popular and it has a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff are really helpful and friendly.

Southwater Christmas Festival

I stumbled into this while running a few errands. There seemed to be lots of cars in the car park, but there were hardly any people. Perhaps they were all in the pub, as I came at a time between activities. I would have loved to have known about this, but didn't see any posters or banners around the village. The post on here was only put on a few days before. I though it was really poorly advertised and such a waste as I'm sure I wasn't the only person who missed it!

Southwater Christmas Festival - 5th and 6th December 2008

Southwater will be holding its annual Christmas Festival this coming weekend, the 5th and 6th December.

The weekly market will be on Friday night, from 4pm to 9pm, and there will be a party in No 19, the coffee shop from 6pm to 9pm. Other shops are also planning to open late.

Saturday, 6th December is the main event, with activities all day in Beeson House and Lintot Square from Father Christmas arriving at 10am, right through to carols around the Christmas Tree at 4pm. Aaron Sidwell (Steven Beale from Eastenders) will be here to help with the proceedings.

Father Christmas will be in his grotto in Beeson House from 10.30am to 12 noon, and again 2pm to 3.30pm, where he will be giving gifts to Southwater children. There is no charge for a visit to see him, as this has been funded by Southwater Parish Council.

Also in Beeson House, Angie Choat, our Youth Worker will be holding Christmas craft sessions. There will be Christmas story sessions in the Library too.

In Lintot Square, there will be entertainers and fairground rides, and music throughout the day, thanks to Tanbridge House School Orchestra, Bryan Murray and Dave Arthur, and the Horsham Youth Concert Band.

Father Christmas will be turning on the Christmas lights at 4pm, and this will be followed by carols around the tree.

All the village shops will be open, and keep an eye out for Santa, in the "Find the Santa" competition, where there are big prizes to be won! Entry forms available in the shops.

So do come along and join in the Christmas fun at Southwater!

A new village market is launching next Friday in Southwater’s Lintot Square and will run from 4pm to 9pm every Friday until 19^th December. If this trial of the new format market is successful, planning permission will be sought to make the market a regular fixture in the New Year.

Following the demise of the Lintot Square Tuesday markets in September, Horsham District Council and Southwater Parish Council have been developing ideas in co-operation with local traders and market operators to generate a market that could better serve the needs of the local community.

The concept of a Friday afternoon/evening market is a novel one that is hoped will capture wider interest and support from the local community, many of whom were never able to take advantage of the Tuesday morning markets.

Garry Mortimer-Cook, Town Centres and Markets Manager for Horsham District Council explained more, “When we were looking at what had happened to the previous market and feedback from traders and residents it was clear that we needed to make the market more accessible and useful for more people. We hope that the hours for the market will give those that work and those picking up children from school a convenient opportunity to use the market on a regular basis. By carrying on though to the early evening the market will also tie in with the Friday night takeaway and restaurant trade. The market will be demand led, but we are encouraging a mix of market stalls that will complement existing Southwater shops so that the community has a greater choice of products (and the ones that they want) on their doorstep.”

“Southwater Parish Council think this is a great idea and urge the community of Southwater to use the market and let us know what you want to see on it. The message is - This is your market – use it or lose it!”

Southwater Fireworks Extravaganza - Saturday 8th November 2008

Southwater Infant and Junior School field, Worthing Road.

Gates open 5:15pm, Guy Judging 6:00pm,
Quiet Display 6:15pm, Grand Prize Draw 6:45pm, Main Display 7:00pm.

Tickets:

Adult £4.00 (£3.00 in advance), School aged children £1, Pre-school children Free.

Tickets are available on the night at the Junior or Infant School Gates or in advance from Bearing Gifts in Lintot Square, and via the schools w/c 3rd November.

Attractions:

A quiet and main firework display. Grand Prize Draw. Funfair. Beer Tent. Guy Competition. Light ropes. Hot food and soft drinks etc.

Parking:

If you live in the village you are advised to walk if possible. If you are travelling from outside Southwater, there is public parking available in Lintot Square in the centre of Southwater, which is only a 2 minute walk from the Infant School gate.

This event can not happen with the help of many volunteers this is a list of help which is really needed.

If you can assist in any way, please contact Jenny Myers via any of the Schools.

Saturday 8th Anytime from 9am. Placing barriers etc.
Saturday Afternoon until 3:30pm putting up signs

The sale will take place on Sunday 12th October between 10.30 and 11.30am at the Leisure Centre in Pevensely Road.

On sale will be maternity wear, baby equipment, childrens clothes, toys and games.

Entry is 50p and children are free.

Parking will be at the Fairbank Road car park ONLY (behind the Library)

Southwater War Memorial

I have just read in the Southwater Parish News that the new War Memorial will be unveiled on Sunday the 7th of September. This will be immediately followed by a dedication ceremony by the Bishop of Horsham.

The Southwater Memorial Fund Committee have done an excellent job in achieving this. They have also created a comprehensive website that contains details of all the servicemen whose names will appear on the memorial:

The large number of names it contains, for what was a small village at the time, is poignant reminder of the sacrifices previous generations have made on our behalf.

OK story is I live in Camelot Close , There is a bunch of kids who have decided that ringing my bell late at night and breaking my windows is their hobby , i've heard the name jake mentioned , any parents want to own up , my neighbors are also getting very bored with their antics.

The criminal damage has been reported, I've now installed a security camera so please keep your kids in check

Southwater Village Fete

A traditional village fete is being held in Southwater next Saturday, 28th June 12pm - 4pm

You will find everything from swingboats to the coconut shy, a small animal zoo to a creepy crawlies exhibit, beat the goalie to lucky dips, there will be lots for you all to see and do. Traditional stalls and games, the ever popular beer tent, barbeque and fantastic catering are amongst the other highlights you can look forward to. As always, children from the three Southwater schools will be performing displays of their dancing, gymnastics and singing.

Admission is £1 for adults and 50p for children

All proceeds go to The Schools of Southwater PTA, Registered Charity numbers 1081491 & 1036794

when you are walking from the Leisure Centre to lintott square look over the high hedge and come and see your very successful Bowls Club with one of the best kept Greens in WestSussex.all the work in keeping this green is done by the members and is a credit to the older generation in this area.please come and support us and new members are always welcome. having won 13 of our last 14 games we think we are doing Southwater proud. what do you think ?:)

I'm moving to southwater shortly and was wondering what restaurants are around that deliver? I hear there's a nice Indian in Southwater. Is there any pizza delivery companies? Also Fish & chips etc. I'm making it sound like I only eat junk food, I don't but it is nice to order take away on a Friday so that I don't have to worry about cooking :-)

hi i would like to move to southwater.i am thinking of trying to do a council exchange to the area.i have done my homework and think southwater looks good.at the moment im in a small village with no transport and nothing to do.i am bored and so are my kids!!!southwater looks like its a bit more busy and fun!!!
the only problem is convincing my partner.he lived in s/w about 10 years ago and he hated the place.said it was a rough place with loads of trouble etc.i have friends there who say different but hes not budging.!!!so my question is what is it really like??are the council estates good etc
please help me convince my partner to move!!!

i am soon moving to southwater and have a question for anyone who knows the area well.i work at christs hospital and wondered if there is a quick way of getting from southwater to ch without using the main road and still being able to turn up for work in a reasonable state and not covered in mud !! would also appreciate it if anyone could tell me the approximate mileage for this journey.

We were in the Hen and Chicken last night. The "Tube Snake Boogie Band" were playing. They were fantastic. It was great to see the pub full and see people of all ages enjoying themselves. Apparently there was a great band a couple of weeks before. Lets hope these music nights become a regular thing.:cool:
