It would be great if the eventual purchasers would restore its proper name again. This old coaching inn has been known as The Cock Inn for centuries, appears in bus timetables and is also quoted in directions. It's also an important part of Southwater's history. The Old Well means nothing - I believe it was chosen because they found a well on the premises but until the latter part of the last century, nearly every house in the village would have had a well, too, so hardly a novelty!

Many pubs recently have subscribed to the fad of changing their old and well known names - The Swan at Pulborough and the Horse and Groom in Horsham to name but two - but have soon found out that it's the way a pub is run that makes or breaks it and returned to their traditional titles.

So lets hear it for a return to The Cock Inn. If anyone hears of the sale going through, perhaps they can let us have the information.

Christmas Fayre

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

The Southwater Infant and Junior Schools' Christmas Fayre

will be this Saturday (1st December 2007)

Grand opening at 1:45 by the Infant School Choir, stall open at 2pm. This was back in Germany where I was also teaching for about 5 years, before I moved over to the UK, now to Horsham.
I am absolutely open to any style that comes along. You're experienced in one of the various Karate sub-styles, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Escrima, JKD, Sanshou, Kickboxing... whatever... We can exchange knowledge and experience to improve our own training and have partners for sparring and experimenting.

What I'm looking for is a group of people with the mutual interest to do training together. With that I mean it depends on the response to this what this will look like.
Everyone joining in has a say in what we do. Whatever the group is interested in, can be discussed and tried out.

Also if there are some people who are relatively new to Martial Arts and would like to get an insight or start a serious regular training, we can talk about setting up a little structured beginners group (maybe even with more than one teacher, if qualified and interested), because I always enjoyed teaching just as much as training myself.

So yea... I am a very laid back person, easy to get along with. I need to get my own training seriously going again after the trouble of international moving and am also looking forward to having a learners group again as well.

This whole thing would be starting off as a no-money project. Everyone joins because of interest.
However if enough people are interested in a structured beginners (or advanced just as welcome) group,
we might talk about some sort of compensation after a try-out month or so if everyone agrees.
But I think at the beginning it's all about getting to know eachother and finding out if this is what you, me and all of us actually want.

What I cannot offer at the moment is a fixed location though. Having just moved here, I have no idea where to look. Youth clubs maybe?
Renting a room, hall or a gym would mean for us to come up with the money. So if anyone has a good idea I'd be pleased to hear about it. Generally all we need to start with is a room big enough so that noone kicks the neighbour, so it's depending on our number.
Otherwise I know a nice closed-in little meadow in Holbrook for example, that I use at the moment, but that is not a long term solution seeing the (even more) rainy season approaching soon.
So let me know, if anyone knows a good place.

I am open to suggestions and questions and hope to get as many answers as possible...
(Also in case you want to know more about the particular style I am training.)

Thanks for reading so far. If you read all of it you must be interested, so... drop me an email:

freeBatjko(at)hotmail.com

Thanks,
-Patrick-

P.S. I just posted this in the Horsham sub-forum and thought Southwater might have someone interested as well. Hope this is ok.

Bowls

SOUTHWATER 103 SHOTS

STORRINGTON 37 SHOTS.

SOUTHWATER 67 SHOTS

PULBOROUGH 44 SHOTS.

SOUTHWATER 49 SHOTS

FITTLEWORTH 44SHOTS.

Southwater Station on the Downs Link

Until just before the building works started there was the old railway sign on the remaining east platform. Judge Dredd, or Southwater Parish Council?

As for the answer, the story should help you work it out.

I walked from my home in the north of the village in the daytime over to the bus stop on Worthing Road (you know the one - its got a brick-built shelter? Possibly the warmest and shelteriest shelter i've ever known, anyway) to wait for the 98 bus to Horsham. As the 98 came into view, a small blue car pulled to a halt at the far end of the stop, where the bus would normally pull in.

This struck me as a little odd. I was the only one at the stop, so they coudn't have been picking anyone up, and as there was only one person in the car they weren't dropping anyone off either. Someone lost?

A woman got out, walks over towards me, the bus drawing closer, and paced towards where i was outside the shelter. Someone lost.

Not out of hostility but only to warn her of obstruction and probably of mild danger (a bus being a bit on the long side and somewhat more difficult to maneuver than a 1998 Corsa), I exclaimed;

"Excuse me, there's a bus coming love!"

Her response, was made as if I was a man with recently restored sight, observing with utter suprise that the sun rose and set every day.

"Yes?"

In shock and feeling a little like I were Canute returning with soggy ankles, I could only quietly muster;

"I jus' thought you ought to know".

Actually, she was pacing for the parish notice board that affixed to the end of the shelter.

At this point the bus steered round her car and pulled in further up the luxuriously lengthy bus stop and I hopped on.

So, the parish council must be made of stern stuff, and i for one am glad. To have such strongly-minded and determined indivduals listening to the citizens of Southwater and ensuring that local facilities are respected we are lucky. Truly egalitarian custodians of our fine village. In fact, I'm so confident in their dedication to matters concering the village, they're bound to read this.

Southwater Relocation?

Hi everyone. We are looking at Storrington/Billingshurst/Southwater and all villages in between as possible relocation places this August. Our son will be at secondary school in 2008 so we want to be near to a good school. Southwater crops up quite a lot -there are plenty of houses on the market. Is this is a good sign?! I notice an earlier correspondent described it as 'Toytown', so is this just another soulless estate or somewhere really worth looking at? We also want to avoid traffic noise as this has blighted our lives where we are currently living. We don't want to be out in the sticks as it's important that the children have a local social life as they get older, but neither do we want to be amidst chaos! Any advice, please?

The Lintot

Last night Mrs DNW decided she wanted to try out Souhwater's newest pub - The Lintot.

I must admit until now I had not been terribly excited about the arrival of a new 'modern' pub as I normally prefer old fashioned pubs with lots of history. However, the pub soon won me over when I saw they had Marston's Pedigree on the pumps (not surprising really as I soon found out the Lintot is owned by Marston's) The Lintot also has an excellent selection of wines and after our initial drink we decided to order a reasonably-priced bottle of Kumala Pinotage Shiraz to go with our meal.

The food was good and the drink was good but what struck me most about the Lintot last night was the atmosphere. There were people of all ages, families with young children, young and old couples, groups of friends, pensioners, in fact just about every demographic group that is resident in Southwater. All of these people where having fun and getting along fine and it really gave the place a sense of community spirit.

But the best bit of all (for me anyway) is that the Lintot is SMOKE FREE. The success of this and the success of the Horsham pubs like The Black Jug that took the brave decision to go smoke free early have really proved the doom-mongers wrongs. The smoking ban will not kill of pubs but will revive them!

Incidentally it is possible to have a cigarette in the Lintot they have thoughtfully put an outside patio area on the upper floor.

Well done The Lintot you will certainly be receiving our custom again :):)

Pet Feeders.

Based in Southwater and animal lovers and children alike! It seems to have started last Saturday. We have been disturbed every night since by smoke. Waking due to the smell of smoke is worrying to say the least. It was first reported to the police on Saturday. Monday night we put in a complaint and were the third. Following an investigative walk this evening it seems to be coming from Sunnymeade Farm area on the other side of the dual carriageway. Does anyone have any other ideas as to where it is coming from. It is every night and something should be done to stop it.

Southwater News Links

You may have noticed that the Southwater News links on the top right corner of the web site have not been working for some time.

The links are automatically generated by an RSS feed from the West Sussex County Times web site. This is outside of the control of this forum. I will continue to monitor is and if the feed is not resumed will eventually remove the links altogether.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
