"The water used in the fountain was turned off to help with regional water shortages and, now that the Council is successfully reducing the water it uses in other areas, it is now to be turned back on again".

Is it staying on permanently again or just for the anniversary. It sometimes got switched off to prevent icing in the winter

The Shelley Fountain is going to be switched on again on Monday (November 13) to coincide with its 10th anniversary.

I love it, the fountain was very controversial when it first was commissionned, and it did not work properly at first, but I believe that new designs like this should see the light of day. I'm fed up with boring 'council art' which blights other cities, this one is a gem. 180 gallons is not good though - perhaps they can adjust the timing so it does its thing on the hour?

It’s hard to believe the Shelley Fountain has been with us for 10 years already.

I am fan of it and think it would be a great shame if it continues to remain out of service.

180 gallons a day is a huge loss though. As you say it would be practicably impossible to redesign it to make it self sufficient.

Perhaps what is needed is some sort of ‘Water Quota’ similar to the way Carbon Quotas work. This would mean that the Council would be permitted to run the fountain again provided something more than 180 gallons a day was saved elsewhere (somewhere where it is more practicable to save water).

It would also be good to see the fountain in the Forum running again and the same principle could be applied to that.

These fountains are some of the many features that give Horsham its character. If we want to continue to attract visitors to Horsham Town Centre I think that they should be started again as soon as possible (provided that the equivalent water savings are made elsewhere of course).

Shelley's Fountain is ten years old

So the 'love it or hate it' fountain has been with us for ten years now. I have to say I like it, although that is tempered by the fact that it was paid for by the Sainsbury's Art Foundation not the ratepayers.

According the County Times it was using 180 gallons of water a day despite the fact that is recycled. This is due to the evaporation, splashing and filtering. It would need a huge reservoir to contain sufficient rainwater to make it self sufficient.

I am not sure if it will ever run again. Perhaps the design needs to be revisited to give us back a moving sculpture without water.

Any suggestions?
