As much as I agree with the smoking ban I have to say I agree with this statement.

It's a shame that our pubs aren't more like those on the continent. They have designated areas for smokers, non-smokers and family rooms - AND IT WORKS.

The big problem about this government is that folk are rapidly losing their 'freedom of choice' it's either you WILL do this or you WON'T do this. It's more like a dictatorship. Of course there will never be an 'ideal' environment as all folk are different but that's why we need the choice option. To totally ban smoking from pubs is going to harm their trade as has been seen in Ireland and Scotland - pubs are closing since the bans. Healthwise of course it's obvious not to smoke but folk have smoked since time immemorial - and will continue to do so. As a community folk have to recognise that not just ONE group should have priority, compromise is the solution in most things.

Good point I hadn't thought of that. I like the beer garden in the Black Jug in the summer. I guess there will be a lot more smokers out there now. But I suppose it is a far price to pay for getting a smoke free pub.

I'm currently enjoying smoke-free drinking in Horsham's non-smoking pubs, but I'm starting to wonder what it'll be like in the summer, when I may have to stay inside the pub because the garden's full of smokers. Has anybody thought of this?

I also agree with the extended hours, we used to have a bar in Mallorca and were open till 4am. Never once did we have any trouble as there is no pressure to make people leave etc its high time people were allowed to choose for them selves when they have to go home. after all we are all adults!

Yes. As a no fan of the current government I would reluctantly agree that this is something Labour have got right. I also welcome their move to extend licensing hours.

MPs have voted today. Smoking is to be banned from ALL pubs and clubs. :)

The ban should come in to force by Summer 2007. Thank you to the Black Jug, Lynd Cross and other Horsham establishments that have already taken the lead on this issue.

Surely smokers are picking on everyone else whenever they light-up? Do they ever ask those standing nearby if they mind breathing health-effecting smoke, or if they mind having to wash their clothes next day to get rid of the smell?

I have just come back from an early evening Christmas drink in the Black Jug. The pub was absolutely heaving!. It was so good to have a smoke free atmosphere. We were stood right by the door as we could not get in any further. There were quite a few smokers outside the front door and having chatted and joked with a couple of them the really did not seem to mind going outside. This poll wont allow me to vote again because I have already voted. Does any one else who haven't voted yet have any thoughts on this?

Good point about the archaic drinking laws. I am a Tory voter myself (Well you have to vote for SOMEONE:unsure: ) but I completely agree with the government on this one. I fear that the Tories are opposing it just because Labour has proposed it. For another example of this see my poll about the terror laws.

I'm an ex-smoker and can't bear to be near anyone smoking. I still think people should be able to choose whether to go into the "smoker's" pub or the "clean" ;) pub. I don't think it's fair to completely take away someone's pleasure in life, as long as the workers are smokers too and people don't mind ash in their drink!!!

I find smoking an obnoxious habit and would always prefer to visit a smoke free pub but I'm against a compulsory ban. Pubs are not 'public places'. They are private establishments who choose to allow people on to their premises to eat, drink or whatever they decide to allow them to do. The government has no place telling landlords what they can and cannot allow visitors to their private property to do. It should be left to market forces. There is an argument for pubs to clearly show their smoking policy outside so that the public can make an informed choice but not for a ban in my opinion.

I could say (I usually do) that this government is obsessed with banning things but then I see the tories trying to keep our existing archaic licensing hours whilst labour are bringing in more flexibility, something I applaud.

No one is picking on smokers! It's just the smoke. I went to a pub on Saturday for a friends stag night, it was very smoky, I ended up getting an asthma attack at 10pm. If you haven't had one, it's quite frightening - you simply run out of breath.

In all my years as a DJ, I have worked many venues. The one thing I notice is that more and more venues are becoming non-smoking, which is very welcome to me personally as someone working there, and more clients who book these venues insist on the function being no-smoking. Question is can we exclude our smoking friends? Should they have a space to indulge their habit? Maybe venues who wish to continue to allow smoking should have an efficient smoke extraction system?

Stop picking on us smokers. If a pub like the Black Jug wants to ban smoking then fine, we can go else where, but a ban should NOT be compulsory :angry:

I have been in the Black Jug quite a few times since the ban was introduced. I think the ban has been a great success. The Lynde Cross has also brought in a total smoking ban which has probably had more impact since it tends to have a younger clientele and therefore probably more smokers. I think that any pub that serves food is going to have to bring a ban in eventually so they may as well bite the bullet now and get on with it.

I went for a drink in the Black Jug at the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see they have enforced a smoking ban throughout the entire pub. I was also surprised that the pub was packed and the ban has obviously had no effect on custom. It made me wonder what the general consensus of opinion is regarding the proposed smoking ban in pubs.

So the question for this poll is:

Should smoking be banned in all pubs in Horsham?

p.s I should add that I am a non smoker myself and have voted yes
