The pub has now closed and looks sad with the windows boarded up. It is all set for redevelopment but is still waiting for HDC to give it the nod. I think that the delay is over the capacity of the drains.

I also noticed that the King & Barnes signs have been removed. Does anyone know where they went?

Dear M thank you for the Nelson topic, it brought back many memories of the 1954 era, I never went into the actual pub (not Old enough) but as a young bride i lived in trafalgar road above a Grocery shop called Mash's number 10. there was a quaint alley way up the side of the shop and a number of houses built at back.

We had friends the Dales whom i believe emigrated to Canada, they lived over the road but came to stay for weekends, I know it sounds odd, but we were young, also we had the pool table. Our living room stretched the front of the shop the double decker bus stopped right outside, eyes looked in and what a surprise it looked like a pool parlour on old films, picture it and have a chuckle trlby hats, cigarette smoke dull lights not forgetting the beer.

No Money, lots of homemade fun.

I hope it survives. I could name quite a few ex pubs in Victorian Horsham. [/quote] I would have to agree that it would be a great loss to lose another pub (not that I spend much time in pubs) they're wonderful old buildings some of them, I can't say I recall the Nelson though.

It would be a real shame to see a historic pub dissappear. It's one of the few integrated back street pubs left. I've visited it a few times over the years and I like its old fashioned English environment.

That said I can see the brewery's view. There is no parking so I dare say some residents will welcome it's closure since it must be frustrating not to find a parking space on your street.

I hope it survives. I could name quite a few ex pubs in Victorian Horsham.

Rumour (well informed as ever!) has it that The Nelson is closing this Friday (11th April 2008) and the alcohol has to be sold by close of play.

So if you want a lot of beer for good prices you know where to walk to!

The Nelson has had a reprieve until the drainage gets sorted out. I heard that they have specialist dancers (from Poland?) in the hall on a Saturday night!

Now this pub is featured on Hidden Horsham. It feature shows images of the planned block of apartments together with pictures of the pub today..

Its always sad to see a pub close, particularly one that depends on local trade. Having never set foot in the Nelson I don't know how busy it is but according to the brewery it is not making any money. I suspect like post offices and village shops it is a case of use it or lose it. How many pints would a landlord have to sell each week to make a decent living? Does anybody know how much gross profit a tenant gets on each pint these days?

The title gives this post away. The pub is to be pulled down and replaced by 14 flats if the developers get their way. The local residents are set to object. The landlord and lady wanted to develop it as a family pub but it seems that the land is worth more to the brewery :(
