I went to Filippos when it first opened and was not impressed at all. Despite the place being empty it took ages for someone to actually acknowledge us (got near to the point of walking out) and the food was, eventually, very average.

Décor not exactly oozing style either. Worst of all - the premises weren't licensed!

Perhaps things have improved (have they got a licence yet?!), but my first impressions meant I haven't been back - as someone pointed out, there are plenty of other Italian restaurants in Horsham. Whatever you think about the chains, I've only ever had great service and food at the likes of Prezzo, Strada etc.

Hi,
I must say the River Kwai Thai restaurant next to the old townhall is quite nice. I was there twice and the food was absolutely spot on. Very well prepared and delicious, although I fooled myself thinking the green chillies probably weren't that hot. :Whistling:
I also like their athmosphere at is rarely packed full, with a nice fireplace in the back and good wooden features.

But Pizza Express is hard to condemn on the basis of their food, because it is excellent. The fact that they aim at world domination is another story.

My daughter and i went to pizza express and really we were not impressed.

The waitor was very moody, the food was not very impressive at all, not a very good atmosphere.

A couple came in to try and book a table for later and were very rudly turned away.

The music was so annoying that we did'nt want to stay for desert.

We then went onto smith and western for desert, Were shown to our table straight away and the waitress was very friendly and attentive.

The drinks tasted much better, and i was impressed with the atmosphere and it was much easier to talk as we were comfortable and relaxed.

The desert was very nice.

We would love to go back for a meal and ill post how we get on.

My wife and I also use George's, mainly because Maggie is disabled. We used to use Piccolo's quite a bit, but that seems to have gone downhill somewhat. Being a good friend of Filippo Marziano I would talk up his new restaurant in Park Place, and not just because he is a friend. The Italian language class I was in had our last meal there and it was superb. Indeed one of the teachers, an Italian lass, was most impressed. You'll get a true taste of Italy there.

We like George's because the man himself is a really pleasant guy and I find it somewhat depressing that he - and others - are having problems. Horsham needs restaurants like his and Filippo's, where the attention to detail (and the consequential standard of food, both in its taste and its presentation) is so much more evident.

Contrary to AndyH's experience at The Station (above), on the very date of his posting we had the worst meal we have ever suffered - at this very establishment.

Starters arrived OK, main course took 45 mins to deliver, lamb cutlets were raw (should have been medium) with charcoal-burnt bones, other party member's fish dishes were cooked (kept hot?) until dry and inedable - even the accompanying lemon was hot and burnt! etc etc.

Complaints were heard and bill altered appropriately but the occasion was wrecked. We won't go there again !

Suggest you try one of the many Indian restaurants in Horsham - never had a bad meal - all Pizza places deliver what's on the tin - George's (Greek) is good - use it or loose it. Pubs around and about also generally good. All are kid friendly as long as kids are adult friendly.

For a family with children i would recommend Smith & Western, really fun atmosphere and great food. :cool:

I think we do very well for restaurants in Horsham, and my husband and I eat out once a week. We have found that in the summer months we can walk into virtually any restaurant without booking, but during late autumn and winter we have to book in advance, even in the many italian restaurants. That time of year, I have found that I can't even book a table 3 weeks in advance in George's, which we use for special occasions like everyone else. Also, I don't seem to be able to book a table at any time of the year at the Thai, by the Aga shop, which everyone raves about, perhaps they don't like me! But the Thai above the Golden Curry takeaway, is rarely full, and has good food and good service, which I didn't find at the other Thai.

I went to The Station Beefeater this week with my family, including my 2 sons aged 3 and 6. I was most impressed with the place as it is the first time that I have been in there for about 3 years. The menu was very good with a seperate menu for children. The service was good, as was the food. I will certainly be going back. (Even better, you don't stink like an ashtray when you go home!:))

The quality of food is important, but good service is high on my list.

I'm fed up of sitting in ~~restaurants~~ pizza places staffed by scruffy teenagers with no customer service skills.

Nothing annoys me more than feeling like the staff have forgotten you are there.

Hi there, thanks for your positive response.

I agree George's used to often be full up on Saturday and had to turn people away but he has always struggled during the week. At the moment, from what he was telling us yesterday lunch-time, he is rarely full these days.

We too have always used George for special occasions, and introduced family and friends, but have recently started popping in for a lunchtime snack (I've recently retired) which we have found to be extremely good value but the place is usually near-enough empty on weekdays and Saturdays at lunch time.

The pizza/pasta places are good - and you can usually get a table without booking - but it would be such a shame if we didn't have a choice of cuisine when we fancy eating out.

George might not be there for our special occasions if his general day-to-day business doesn't improve.

Lets hope everyone will start eating out more now the summer holidays are over.

Thank you for registering and welcome to the forums.

I have eaten several times in both George's Greek Restaurant and El Bodegon and think they are both great restaurants. I must admit I haven't been to either in the last couple of months but they are still high on my list of choices.

My wife and I unusually eat out at least once a week. We rarely book and often end up in one of the 'pasta places' by default. On several occasions I have turned up at George's on a Saturday hoping to get a table only to be turned away because they are fully booked.

We tend to use Georges mainly for special occasions (of course we do book for them!)

Has anyone else noticed that many of the more individual restaurants in Horsham are struggling against the big pizza/pasta chains that seem to be taking over the town?

I think it is a great shame that good family run restaurants such as Georges Greek Restaurant in the Carfax and the Spanish Tapas bar in Pires Place are having to struggle against big national companies. We want to have a choice of places to eat - not just which Italian shall we try tonight?
