From what I saw it was a very popular event. It should definitely become a regular feature on the calendar.

I agree TCM deserves great credit for organising this (and for taking a very 'hands'-on role during the day). Credit should also go to all the participating traders and everybody else who took part. It is great to see Horsham working together. :smooooth:

I was really impressed with the Italian market, it was a great start and hopefully something that can be built up over time. The Ferrari's seemed to be a fantastic crowd puller. It was lovely to see Piccolo's, tortellini's, dixey's etc joining in. It would be good to have a different themed market, perhaps 4 times a year.

TCM, I suggest you start a seperate thread asking for ideas on the French theme. I'll have a think too, we're off to France in a few weeks for a holiday, so I'll keep this in mind. It will be interesting to see how it has changed since I lived there many years ago.

A Horsham FrenchFest (French market plus entertainments) is scheduled in for the 14/15th September. This will be the market opearator that we tried in Billingshurst last December (standards looked good) and not the one used to coming in to Horsham over previous years.

The Ferraris worked so well that it would be nice to repeat a car parade as part of this but the French never mada a car with the attraction of a Ferrari...closest novelty attraction suggested so far is 2CVs. Any ideas for French themes activities around the market appreciated.

Piazza Italia 2008: Both the market operator and Ferrari Owners Club are up for doing this agiain next year so if the demand is there.....please keep the feedback coming.

As in the above thread; we all enjoyed it. We did not get a chance to see everything but what we saw we enjoyed. It was good that other businesses capitalised on their Italian connections. In the past with the French Market it has struck me as a them vs us contest, not so this weekend. Run the French Market in the same way and you will be onto a winner again

Well done to the TCM and all who helped organise it, even to the weather forecast. The town was busy and looked good. The Ferrari show added to the day, what a great sound! It was good to see the shops building on their Italian connections too

We could get a market with lots of stalls all selling those deserts with jelly & sponge base under a layer of custard covered in cream then topped with hundreds and thousands.....but that might be a trifle bazaar (sorry, I'll get my coat)

Sounds fantastic. I look forward to all these markets. A German market at Christmas will be magical and bring back fond memories. I remember going to the Bavarian Christmas market in Covent Garden in the late nineties with a friend. Little did I know that years later I would marry him!

How about a middle eastern or south american market. Obviously these are going to be run by locally based people rather than the way the french market operates :)

The Fairtrade market will be repeated if the people organising it wish to repeat. Regarding advertising we have promoted heavily using local radio and PR primarily targeting the sorts of areas you indicate and down as far as the Coast-and we get visitors from all these places as a result.

We also use competitions with prizes provided by the market operators to generate coverage and visits. Printed advertising is always an option but is subject to funding availability.

Any event or market soaks up a lot of organisational resources, which themselves are finite, so we are trying to focus on getting a small but quality programme established that makes us a destination for new visitors as you suggest. Europe seems as good a place to start as any but what other countries would you suggest?

Sounds good to me. Is there going to be another Fair Trade market again as well.

Perhaps we could also consider markets from outside Europe?

I think publicity is key to all of this, especially in attracting shoppers from outside the usual Horsham area. It would be good to entice shoppers from Guildford, Crawley, Kingston etc. TCM: how far out do you advertise?

The idea of an Italian market and 'festival' over Easter is still alive and I am looking to meet with local businesses and groups that woiuld like to be involved within the next month. I have a market operator lined up subject to final confirmation. More details once they are sure.

Rather than go for a general European or continental market as they are called i am looking to source some other country specific markets for later in 2007. I have contacts out regarding a German 'cabin' based market for Christmas 2007 and am also investigating the possibility of a Spanish market/festival.

Hope this all sounds good???

I noticed that Leatherhead had an Italian market recently, although i didn't get a chance to go to it. Will we be having one, as was hinted before? My husband practically only eats italian food!
