In addition to Dot Net Web's Reply above the latest press release for the library refers to plans for 2007 including....

"The full museum treatment will also reveal a local dimension to the national celebrations over the abolition of slavery"

Thanks for the link, I will follow that up. I seem to remember that there may have been a book promised to follow this exhibition. I will e mail the museum to find out....

It mentions "Horsham’s involvement in the abolition of slavery". I have no idea what that means but somebody from the museum might know.

A debate has begun over black African slavery and the extent of the governments statement of regret today. The debate seems to be around whether financial reparations should be made for something that happened 200 years ago etc etc. Whilst not wishing to express my views via this forum on this issue it did raise a question in my mind: I have read many books about Horsham but do not recall any reference to slavery in any of them. Perhaps this was never documented or never involved Horsham at a high enough level to merit a historical record.

I would appreciate any information anyone has on the slave trade's relationship to Horsham
