She has just arrived home by foot (we live the other side of the bypass - 10 min walk) furious having abandoned her car in the car park with the non essential stuff. Again, there appears to be a gridlock in this car park, and this time it has also caused us huge delays and changes of plans today.

So, I urge you to avoid Tesco from now on until they resolve this continuing fiasco.

Ferris Wheel in the Carfax 2008

Back by popular demand!:

http://www.visithorsham.co.uk/WhatsOn.aspx

For some pictures and information from last year I have included a link to M's Hidden Horsham article:

http://www.hiddenhorsham.co.uk/57/ferriswheel.htm

DJ competition in Hosham looking for sponsors / prizes

Hi all, I am in the final stages of putting together an exciting DJ competition in Horsham to run in a few weeks time, these are really good fun for those who take part, and great to watch too. As usual with these things, there isn't a budget, but we are passionate about what we do. I am looking for local businesses who may be able to contribute a little sponsorship or even a prize. Ideally we need to cover the cost of posters and printing in return for as much publicity as we can give!

So, if you know of anyone who may be able to help, I would be very grateful to hear from you.
Thank you very much,
Brian

HouseProud to play Barns Green Music Festival

I am very proud to announce that as a member of the HouseProud team, we are going to bring quality House Music to this year's Barnes Green Music Festival. During our somewhat terse conversation their representative stated that house prices would be adversely affected. This struck me as unlikely and certainly unproven and a scare tactic.
I was indifferent about Horsham FC coming to the area until I read the literature. Now that I have read it I find myself inclined to say yes to the club coming because the self styled Action Group appear to be out for themselves rather than supporting the wider community. Surely there are several advantages:

1. The current Holbrook Club is unsustainable. It's not used by enough residents and when I visited it I found it unremarkable and inclined to shabbiness. I didn't join although I am a member of another club some three miles away. New sports facilities at this site would be a fantastic amenity for the area.

2. Horsham FC need a new home to expand and this is a good site for them. They don't get big crowds and neither are they ever likely to since they are a minor league club. The town needs a club

3. Everytime a new develoment is suggested the issue of house prices crops up. Do you remember the fuss over the local pub's change of use a few years ago? House prices continued to rise. There is a severe shortage of affordable homes in this part of Horsham and that is what will keep the house prices high.

4. The effect on local businesses will surely be beneficial especially for fast food outlets and supermarkets . The retail busineses have struggled recently with several closing. The new stadium will boost the local economy

5. The issue of car parking is a real one. It's not great now but I understand the new plans are likely to include substantial parking spaces within the Holbrook Club area.

6. I also can't see how a small stadium will change the character of the area. Its all ready happened anyway. I remember as many will when this area was meadows and farmland. The area's character is still developing .

7. I'm perplexed by the loss of amenity arguement as well. The plans are to replace inadequate facilities with better ones.

8. The long term nature of the holbrook site is likely to be change anyway. It's a substantial space and Horsham is struggling to find brown field sites to build the houses needed for the expanding community and required by central government.

9. The literature used by your group is going to annoy people since I don't believe I am the only one who felt it was over the top. I attend over twenty games a year at a ground in South London holding 30 000 people. I've never seen anyone peeing in residents gardens. Sure there is detritus after a game but it's soon claered up.

10. My last point is that it looks as if the Hornets are coming in some form or another so I suggest working with them to get a suitable compromise.

Incidentally the Coolhurst Ground which is owned by Horsham Rugby Club has a problem that is relevant. They own the land but can't afford the much needed new facilities. Their club is continuing to grow with more young people than ever applying for membership. Why not build the new stadium on the site of the present facilities (there is all ready ample parking) and allow the two clubs to share the new facilities.

Horsham English Festival

Following on from the success of the Italian and French Festivals, the first ever Horsham English festival will take place on Saturday 10th May.

Further details will be announced soon on the the English Festival section of the Visit Horsham website.

While on the subject of Visit Horsham we have also just added a calendar which will be populated with future Horsham Town Centre events.

New Horsham Town Centre Hotel Plan

This week's County Times has a front page story about a proposed new town centre hotel for Horsham.

Plans have been submitted for a 67 room Travelodge to be built by converting the existing Exchange House building [next to the bus station].

This is likely to be a much more popular location than the recent, highly controversial, 'hotel in the park' scheme (although I think these two proposals are aimed at different markets).

Whatever the outcome I for one am pleased that a Horsham town centre hotel is still on the agenda. My 'Crime' was that one of my wheels was over a white line and the car was not fully in the box. I had entered the car park after 5pm and the barriers were up. I parked in the underground car park which was half empty. Admittedly the car was parked a bit carelessly but as the car park was so empty it was not hindering anybody. I have seen far worse parking on many occasions in this car park and was not aware that a parking fine system was in force for such minor offences.

The car park is not controlled by Sainsbury's but by Euro Car Parks who would appear to have some very overzealous parking attendants. Also could anyone help with the going rates????

Horsham Mircobiz

I know it's a bit short notice but I have just realised that I have not posted the details of this year's Microbiz event which is being held today in the Drill Hall between 10am and 4pm.

It's a fantastic event for anybody involved in small business and the year features some exciting new exhibitors such as the people behind the 360tv network.

Storm Damage

I took these photos of a fire crew removing a damaged chimney in Blackbridge Lane this evening:

Shops Generating Hot Air And CO2

Have you ever noticed how many shops have their doors wide open all day, every day of the year? I asked the manager of a shop once why they did it, as the staff were complaining that they were freezing cold. The reply I received basically went along the lines of, “it is corporate policy to have the doors open all the time as it is more inviting to potential customers”. This manager told me that they were therefore not allowed to close the front doors no matter how cold it was outside.

So instead of closing the doors, all these shops have “air curtain” heaters blowing down in the door way. A bit of investigation online has revealed to me how much electricity these heaters use. A typical heater uses 7.5 kilowatts! (7,500 watts) per hour.

Now some sums....

7.5x 8 = 60 kilowatts per day, which equals 480 kw for a week.

Assuming these shops run these things for 30 weeks a year that is 14400 kw!

Every kilowatt of electricity generates 0.461 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) so this one shop is responsible for 6638 kg of CO2! The shop closed in <STRIKE>1965</STRIKE> 1986 and H Samuels moved in and put up their clock. For reasons best known to them they covered this inscription with the upper clock mount. See the two pictures below.

Jury Cramp was a local jeweller who learned his trade in Clerkenwell, hence the surviving name stone 'Clerkenwell House' If anyone can help with the date that would be great, a photo from <STRIKE>1965</STRIKE> 1986 or before might reveal the answer.
