Mums Needed for Cycling Proficiency Campaign

Hi!

I’m Sam and I work for Cycling England, an independent body tasked with getting more people cycling. As part of our work, we run a scheme called Bikeability (www.bikeability.org.uk); the current day cycling proficiency test.

West Sussex is currently lagging behind the rest of the country in offering Bikeability training to children. Over 8,000 children in the area are eligible to receive Bikeability training, but currently none do.

We are looking for mums from the local area who are interested in raising awareness of the lack of access to the scheme. We want to try and persuade West Sussex County Council to make Bikeability available to all local children. If you would like to get involved, please email Dee at: depali.sanghvi@bluerubicon.com

School Swimming Lessons at the Pavilions

My son who is in year 3 has just started swimming lessons at the Pavilions. We were told that it was preferred that children do not wear goggles for the lessons but they could if we requested it. He did wear goggles for the first lesson but was then told he couldn't.(against our express wishes). The reason that the swimming teachers do not allow goggles, is that if a child fell into a river or lake they wouldn't have goggles on. That's their reasoning. OK fair point, but they would also not be wearing swimming trunks, they would more than likely be fully clothed. So by their logic, can they teach children to swim fully clothed with shoes on???

How many Olympic swimmers do you see swimming without goggles?

Let's face it, chlorinated water stings your eyes. Would you choose not to wear goggles to go swimming? What does any of this gain for the children?

A letter came home with my son this week and it's also been formally reported in this week's County Times (small section on the front page) that Mrs Johnson is leaving after 7 years.

After school activities / School project days?

Hi there,

I do not know many details about the british/english school system, being foreign myself, so I thought I'd just ask:

Do schools, especially here in Horsham, have something like a "project week" of sorts, in which the students have no regular classes, but just a specific irregular course every day (like different sports, arts, languages, poetry etc)...
or something similar?

I am also wondering how common after-school activities are, especially for the college age range. Are they supported or welcomed at all by the school themselves, maybe providing a location or whatnot?

Millais Day Nursery, has run successfully for the last 11 years and is rated as one of the top childcare providers in Horsham (according to Ofsted). The nursery staff are dedicated to the children and offer a very high standard of care, a standard of care we believe we would be unable to find anywhere else in the local area.

Like many other districts, boroughs and cities in the UK, Horsham suffers from a shortage of nurseries, this decision goes against the government’s plan to increase childcare facilities and encourage mothers to return to work.

Please help us to save Millais.

Hello everyone,

We are (fingers crossed) moving to Horsham soon and I am looking into primary schools for my son, we appear to fall in between Heron Way and Kingslea. I have managed to find some information on Heron Way, which looks great but as Kingslea is new I cannot find any feedback information.

If anyone has any children at Kingslea I would be grateful if you could let me know what the school is like.

The media today is covering the story of the (ex) Millais school girl, Lydia Playfoot, who is fighting for the right to wear a 'purity' ring to school. The ring signifies that she will not take part in sex before marraige.

Thanks to Andy H I have had advanced noticed of this demolition wished slipped past me. I have cycled up there and got a few shots though I would like to get inside and over the fence to get some more.. I will have a chat with WSCC to see if I can arrange this...

As Andy pointed out there is a great WSCC stone crest & date stone on the front of the building. I e mailed WSCC on Friday and got a response today (Monday) so that is excellent. Here is what they say:

"Further to your enquiry about the WSCC coat of arms stone on the former St Leonards Infant School, I am advised by Mr Don Ikin, Principal Valuation Surveyor in West Sussex Property Services Department, that he has already been contacted about the preservation of the stone and will be making arrangements as part of the sale for it to be carefully dismantled and donated to the local museum. "

Sounds like everything is in order, I did wonder whether it could be used on the new building though...another e mail going to WSCC soon!

Bullying on the school buses

The recent tragic loss of Ben Vodden and open verdict at the inquest raised the question of bullying on school buses.

What can be done to prevent this happening? Is it a school or county issue? Do we need to have 'bus rangers' to keep and eye on things or trust it to the senior pupils?

Do you have any experiences of this that can help prevent further bullying?

Competition entries go on display

Entries in a competition to involve schools in proposals for a new marketing identity for Horsham town go on public display at the Y Centre, Albion Way from this Saturday 18^th November. The competition has been run on behalf of the Horsham Traders' Guild by West Sussex Education Business Partnership.

Town visitors and shoppers are invited to take a break and pop over to the Y Centre, just a short walk from the Shelley Fountain, to see the designs and perhaps partake of some refreshments at the excellent Y Cafe.

Over 50 students have submitted designs from Collyers College, Forest and Tanbridge Schools. Prizes will be awarded for the best designs in each age range and for the public's favourite design. The overall winners will then go on to meet with Southwater based graphic designers BPMD who will have the job of producing a range of designs for final selection early in the New Year.

Secondary Schools for Horsham children

Having just gone through the process of selecting a secondary school for my year six child I suggested that this forum be opened. We decided on Tanbridge having looked at Forest, Weald and Holy Trinity as well.

For us Tanbridge seemed to offer the best all round education although all of the above schools are excellent. We are lucky in Horsham to be spoilt for choice! One problem with Forest is the uncertainty over who will succeed the Headmaster and whether continuity will be maintained

We went to all of the open evenings starting two years ago, also went on the day visits to see how the schools looked during the day. We only involved our son this year.
