Snow in Horsham

A little bit of snow causing lots of fun around the schools and parks :) Unfortunately I was out of town today and unable to enjoy the scene in daylight. However, I did capture this shot on the way to town at about 07:10.

At about 08:30 it looked as if we were in for a grim day for the Horsham Piazza Italia 2008; cold, windy and overcast with rain not sure whether to turn into sleet or hail. By mid morning it was looking better although still a cold wind persisted. That did not stop the crowds from turning out to support a successful day one. Enjoy the photos below. More will be added to Hidden Horsham in due course, see later postings....

It was a lovely day with lots of people from all different generations there. It was lovely to see all the different photos and i gathered some more personal photos to add to my own collection as my daughter attended the nursery in 1999 which was the year that some children from the nursery visited the Queen.

This is an experimental first for Hidden Horsham. Previously we did not anticipate putting videos on the site due to space and bandwidth. Now that YouTube has come of age, together with broadband we have decided to look at adding embedded videos hosted by You Tube. Here is the first attempt, with no sound....

Now that the strange octagonal Choices office block has been painted it looks quite strange at night. The shadows caused by the lower level street lighting produce this effect. I will update the image when the scaffolding has been totally removed.

Aerial Views of Horsham

The Francis Frith site, see the link in the signature has 18 photos of Horsham . Six each were taken in 1933, 59 and 74. I have put a page on my site comparing these with satellite photos taken in around 2001 from the Local.Live site. I have put a few words below each photo to help identify the area using key landmarks.

Of particular note is the evidence of how the ring road around the Carfax has cut through the buildings. There is a link on the home page or go directly to the aerial view page

Let me know what you think. I would like to improve on the satellite images but not sure how...

Photo competition?

On other forums that I subsribe to there a photo competitions. One has a monthly theme chosen by last months winner. The rules can be simple; original work taken during the month in question. The winner could be chosen by a vote and, perhaps, a local camera shop could offer a small prize.

What do other forum members think? It may take a bit of setting up though...

Please excuse the poor quality photograph.

I have been impressed with the Hidden Horsham site. It makes you realise how much you take for granted around you.

Here is something I spotted in a very familiar place the other day.

My questions are:

What is it?

What is its purpose?

Where is it?

and how old is it?

I think I know the answer to the first 2 and I obviously know the answer to the 3rd one but its the last one I have no idea of.

Can you identify where this is? It is only a few years old and, once again, is within walking distance of the town centre. I am working on a page featuring this area on my web site, see footer. I will post a link when it has been uploaded.

In the meantime, where is this? The background has been hastily replaced with white to remove any clues!

Horsham Postacrds from 1904 onwards

I have come across a collection of postcards from 1904 onwards. The pictures are, of course, from that time as are the words. The postcard seems to be the precursor of e mail or text. See what you think...and if you can help with decoding the handwriting all the better....

We rediscovered these woods in recent weeks. Great for walking and cycling - not sure if you are allowed to cycle but a few careful cyclists were in evidence. Saw this clump of toadstools which caught my eye:

Carfax Rembrance Day Service

Here are some photos from the rembrance Day service that took place at the Horsham War memorial in the Carfax Today:

Today was one of the best attended services I have seen. The Carfax was packed but you could have heard a pin drop during the two minutes silence.

I would like to thank Jean and John Goodyear from the Royal British Legion for conducting the service and for giving me some useful information about the Horsham war Memorial which will be used in a future project

Queen Victoria dedication

It's in the Carfax but have you ever noticed it? It is above the hole-in-the-wall cashpoint of the Natwest bank. The inscription reads 'erected 1897 the 60th year of the reign of Queen Victoria'. There is a bit more information about the builder on my site, together with photos taken just after the building was completed
