Horsham and Southwater Community First Responders

Your Chance of survival drops by up to 23% for EVERY MINUTE that passes when your heart has stopped beating.

First Responders are community based volunteers in Horsham activated by the South East Coast Ambulance Service to provide early intervention for a number of critical medical conditions such as sudden death, chest pain, unconsciousness and breathing difficulties. We hope to have a scheme operational in Horsham in the next few weeks.

Getting help as quickly as possible to a patient suffering a cardiac arrest increases the patient’s chance of survival by around 40%, South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) has a government target of eight minutes to reach these kinds of medical emergencies but in the event of this type of collapse, even that is too long.

Training is provided by SECAmb and the members of the schemes are supported and dispatched in the same way as an ambulance. Volunteers are never sent instead of an ambulance, but do often arrive beforehand and provide the vital links in the chain of survival for these time critical medical emergencies.

Each Community First Responder kits costs £1,800 which includes an AED (Automated External Defibrillator.) an AED if used within the first 4-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, can greatly increase the patients chance of survival.

South East Coast Ambulance Service do not provide funding for all of the equipment, but they do provide the training & support to the volunteers.

Therefore, we are constantly looking for funds from local businesses, organisations and people, to allow us to expand and replace our range of equipment and to keep us operational. All our team give up their time to train, be on call and deal with all the other administration tasks as volunteers, and receive no payment or expenses such as fuel costs at all.

Fairtrade Horsham

The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

Horsham became a Fairtrade Town in July 2005 joining the 160 other towns and cities in the UK who had achieved this award at that time.

Becoming an official Fairtrade Town means that Horsham meets the following criteria:

Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
A range of (at least two) Fairtrade products are readily available in the area’s shops.
Fairtrade products are served in local cafés/catering establishments.
Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)
Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign
A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status

Festival of Inclusion

FREE!! Festival of Inclusion

15th and 16th July Horsham Park

FREE Festival of Inclusion 15th and 16th July Horsham Park Circles Network (a charity which promotes the values of inclusion) has put together a massive FREE Festival of Inclusion for the South East which will take place in Horsham Park on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July.

There will be something for everyone – Music, Arts, Crafts, Sport, Drama, Alternative Therapies, Martial Arts, Films and a Children’s Area.

On Saturday there will be workshops throughout the day, leading to a procession, which will be led by a samba band, and a concert in Horsham Park in the evening. We are also hosting a Sport Relief mile event.

On Sunday the emphasis is on dance and music from around the world, featuring Spanish, Irish, English, India and American dancers, ending in a big party.

Inclusion involves us all is not just a disability issue. It’s about learning to live together and acknowledging that everyone has a contribution to make to society. The main aim of the festival is to promote inclusion and celebrate each other’s gifts through a fun and friendly environment that encourages everyone to feel welcome and part of it.

The festival also aims to build relationships between people based on common interests, for example arts groups, disabled and non-disabled working together to produce something for the festival and the hope that lasting friendships would form from this experience.

The festival of Inclusion is part of the national Park It campaign to encourage people to use their local parks and is supported by Horsham District Council.

Songs for Phillip

Songs for Phillip is a compilation of tracks from some of the best known bands in the Horsham and West Sussex area.

The charity album is the brain child of Simon Fever-Leach. Its purpose is to raise money for CLIC Sargent (caring for children with cancer) and to raise public awareness surrounding leukaemia in children and young adults.

Simon’s brother in law Phillip was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia at the end of 2005.

The CD will go on sale at the Launch Party at the Drill Hall in Denne Road on Sunday 26th March, with an official release date of Monday 27th March.

Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy
