Indeed. Although we are volunteers as it is the ambulance service who call us out we effectively work for them so are covered by their insurance etc.

Thanks for the explanation. Its sounds like a great idea. The only problems I can imagine in this day and age are legal ones. Are you protected against 'patients' that might try and sue you etc? It's a sad but necessary protection IMHO.

When a responder is available they contact ambulance control, who book them on to the ambulance control/ despatch system. When a 999 ambulance is called the ambulance dispatcher can see instantly what resources are available at the time and which is nearest to the patient. If the call is suitable for a responder they will be despatched by ambulance control at the same time that an ambulance and any other necessary resources are dispatched, the idea being that the responder would almost certainly get to the patient first.

Responders are always sent as an extra resource to an ambulance and never instead of. Our role is to look after and stabilise the patient until the ambulance arrives. In a worst case scenario a responder could start CPR and use a defibrillator, if a patient needs such actions they really will not have time to wait for the ambulance.

I was wondering if any of you know if your areas are covered by a Community First Responder Scheme. Such schemes have been set up by the Ambulance Service and involve trained volunteers providing emergency medical care to patients whilst waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
