I noticed yesterday that the Shelley Fountain was not running. I have since heard that it has been switched off to preserve water while we have a hose pipe ban. The fountain in the Forum has also been switched off.

I took a picture this morning. It looks like 3 of Shelley's famous 'balls' have also been removed.

I don't quite understand why they need to switch it of...the water gets sent round in a circle

I assume that even though the water is circulated there will probably be quite a lot of evaporation. It produces quite a ‘spray’, if it is hot and/or windy a fair amount will be lost.

I think the Horsham Advertisor article said they need to top the water up every now and again. Thinking about it, some water must be lost by evaporation, in the hot weather we've been having, and genrally spalshing and spilliling over the edges.

I think it's a good idea to turn it off to save water, but I can't understand why there's missing balls in your picture why have they been removed?

Hi 34

Thank you for registering and welcome to the forums.

If wish I could read minds it would be quite useful . Actually my message was posted three days ago (look at the posted date) I don't know why it wasn't visible to you before - forum gremlins maybe.

Anyway thanks for confirming assumptions. Like you I have no idea why they would want to remove the balls at the same time.

Perhaps they are making the most of this 'down' time to due a bit of maintenance.

On another note, I am sure that the fountain could be modified to collect and filter rainwater to make it self sufficient. A few solar panels on the top too....

Good point M. They are certainly doing that with the fountain in the Forum.

It's a shame the Forum Fountain is switched off. It is so hot now (33C and still rising).

Although I am far to old for that sort of thing I wouldn't mind running through the middle of the fountain right now like the kids do.
