Surprised nobody has picked this one up yet, but on local radio last week it was reported that the government wants West Sussex county council to take up to 1.5 million tonnes of rubbish from London over the next 10 years. We have been told that landfill is running out very quickly and to slow things down we must recycle as much as possible, but just to really screw things up we can deal with someone else's waste.

No doubt a waste contractor somewhere will make a tidy profit, but the council tax payers will ultimately pay for London's inability to look after its own rubbish. Apparently there will be a public consultation.........

Just a quick update. On the news this morning it was reported that the South East Regional Assembly is proposing that West Sussex now takes 2.5 million tonnes of rubbish from the capital. Note that the South East Regional Assembly is a non elected body! I hope that our county council is ready to fight on this one.

Thanks for that info. I had previously thought that all London's waste went into the landfills in the Thames Estuary. I didn't realise they exported it further afield!

I have just found this link on the BBC website:

It says that West Sussex County Council are planning to "challenge" the figures.

'West Sussex councillor Frank Wilkinson said opposing the plan would be "one of his crusades". '

'Councillor Henry Smith, leader of the council, said the authority would fight the plan "tooth and nail". '

Watch this space...

Without wishing to get contraversial on my first post I would like to comment that waste management is a profitable (ie job creating ) and clean business these days. OK, we have enough problems dealing with our own waste but this could bring employment to the region without major environmental impact....just don't put it too close to Horsham

I didn't realise how close the landfill site was to Horsham until I was told about it by a colleague today:

Map of Horsham Landfill

Here are some details on this site:

At least I now know where that early morning smell on the A264 comes from.......
