Hi,

Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant (like the long room)? i.e. not a pub/italian chain

Does anyone know why/how long the long room is closed for?

Thanks a lot

Good question.

I never tried the Long Room. What sort of food did they serve?

That is a shame. I regret not trying it now.

It seems to be very difficult for anybody other than a chain to make their business work at the moment.

I was very sad when Chukkas closed recently. They did a great breakfast, with local produce, and they always seemed busy. Unfortunately I think the ever increasing rents made it impossible for them to continue.

"The Longroom Restaurant is now closed until further notice" - according to their website

I don't think it's the ever increasing rent, more like the very limited menu and that people simply do not want what they are serving. Even worse, if a restaurant really is busy and they're still not making a profit then the proprietor has got something seriously wrong. Either way, it’s no one else's fault.

Another classic example was the Indigo Brasserie;

Food was very good and the price reflected this - but when you're paying a premium, table cloths and proper napkins would be nice not tissue paper. Also no draft beer; 33cl bottled Cobra was £3.50 until I mentioned anywhere else was more like £2.50! (price was dropped very quickly after the rip off was rumbled).
Cutting corners like this meant I went from regular to not going at all - the competition was better so I go went there instead.

The Akash has been in business for over thirty years, I suspect it’s not down to luck.

Other 'non-chain' restaurants worth a look are El Bodegon, River Kwai, Jade City - not sure why you'd exclude the chains just because they are, some of them are very good.

I was referring to the rent for Chukkas. There was recently a letter in the County Times recently that indicated it was over £30K per annum. You would have to sell a LOT of fried breakfasts and jacket potatoes from your half a dozen or so tables to make a profit on that rent.

You have some good restaurants in your list. For another good non Indian or Chain restaurant I would add Georges Greek Restaurant. I have always had great food and service there although it is probably slightly above the Horsham average in terms of prices.

I actually omitted George's because I think it's very overrated; the food is rather bland, not great quality, and expensive for what it is. It’s acceptable.

I’ve only been a few times for friend's ‘special occasions’, perhaps the quality suffers for larger groups, but I wouldn’t choose or recommend it myself.
